Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle Tel: 01833 690606 In the style of
a magnificent and highly ornamented French chateau, the Bowes
is one of the country's greatest private collections of fine
and decorative art and runs an exciting programme of major exhibitions

Egglestone Abbey is a
ruined 12th Century Premonstratensian abbey in a picturesque
setting above the River Tees dating from 1195. Turner painted
here on one of his three visits to Teesdale. About one and a
half miles southeast of Barnard Castle.
Rokeby Hall and Park, Barnard Castle Tel: 01833 637334. This
palladian style country house on the banks of the River Tees
was the setting for Sir Walter Scotts ballad Rokeby.
The house contains a unique collection of 18th century needlepainting
pictures. About 3 miles southeast of Barnard Castle.
The Otter Trust's North
Pennines Reserve (Tel: 01986 893470) is a 230 acre wildlife reserve
near Bowes. It is populated with British and Asian otters, red
and fallow deer, reindeer and rare breeds of farm animals. There
are bird hides overlooking wetland areas as well as picnic sites
and walks to enjoy. About 8 miles west of Barnard Castle.
Raby Castle, Staindrop, Darlington DL2 3AH Tel: 01833 660202
One of England's most beautiful castles with sprawling battlements
and a 200-acre deer park. As well as towers and fortifications,
Raby houses a fabulous art collection, splendid interiors and
treasures including an important collection of Meissen porcelain.
About 6 miles east of Barnard Castle.
