Royal Horticultural Society
- RHS Garden Wisley (RHS) Garden Hyde Hall, Hyde Hall, Rettendon,
Chelmsford, Essex CM3 8ET. Tel: 01245 400256. RHS Garden Hyde
Hall was donated to the Society in 1993. Nearly 40 years of work
has brought it from a windswept hill with just six mature trees,
to the present day Garden of 24 acres. www.rhs.org.uk. About
7 miles north east of Basildon.
Thorndon Country Park, Car parks can be found on Brentwood Road
(A128) and The Avenue. Tel 01277 211250. Fishing is available
if a day ticket is purchased. Horse riding is allowed, but you
must keep to the areas marked with a blue arrow. The most important
habitat in Thorndon Country Park is the ancient deer park area
dating back to the 15th century which has been designated a Site
of Special Scientific Interest. About 6 miles west of Basildon.
Upminster Tithe Barn and
Agricultural Folk Museum, Hall Lane, London, RM14 1AU. Tel: 01708
447 535. The museum is housed in a 16th century tithe barn and
a moated manor house, parts of which date back to the 14th century.
The museum displays include a range of rooms from Victorian times
to the 1930s, Whitefriars Glass, Stanmore Railway and agricultural
machinery. About 8 miles west of Basildon.
