There are collections of modern works in the upstairs galleries while downstairs, 18th century paintings can be seen in their period setting, alongside furniture and objets d'art of the time. There is a collection of society portraits of the day including key works by George Romney (1734-1802), who served his apprenticeship in Kendal.

Rowboats are available for hire, with stylish steamers and vintage cruisers to Lakeside in the south and Waterhead at the northern end. There is a ferry service across the lake to Sawrey giving access to the western side of the lake and Beatrix Potter's former home at Hill Top.
