Chesterfield

St Mary's and All Saints - The Crooked Spire

Chesterfield is famous for its"Crooked Spire", the twisted timbers are the result of inadequate seasoning rather than the romantic tales surrounding the landmark.

  Royal Oak in the Shambles

Medieval Chesterfield was a prosperous town of guilds with a church worthy of its status and some fine buildings. Many of these can still be seen today, hidden behind shop fronts.

Chesterfield is now an industrial town but still holds three vast outdoor markets each week.

  The Revolution House

To the north of the town lies the village of Old Whittington, where a group of conspirators led by the Earl of Devonshire met in 1688 to hatch a plot to overthrow the Catholic King James II. The meeting took place at a little Inn called "The Cock & Pynot" now known as the Revolution House. The plot worked, the country welcomed William of Orange and the course of history changed.
