Fingringhoe Wick Visitor Centre, South Green Road, Fingringhoe,
Essex, CO5 7DN. Tel: 01206 729678. The Visitor Centre - the Trust's
first - was opened in 1975. With the superb Colne estuary on
its doorstep, and surrounded by one of the finest nature reserves
in the county, it is attractive to families, organised wildlife

miles south-east of Colchester.
Abberton Reservoir Visitor
Centre, Church Rd, Layer-de-la-Haye, Colchester, CO2 0EU. Tel:
01206 738172. The site offers excellent birdwatching opportunities
over the 1200 acre reservoir, which is a Wetland of International
Importance. There are facilities for the disabled in the Visitor
Centre and boardwalk access to 2 of the 5 hides. www.essexwt.org.uk.
The Visitor Centre is 6 miles SW of Colchester on the B1026 (a
minor road linking Colchester and Maldon).
East Anglian Railway Museum Chappel Station, Colchester, Essex,
CO6 2DS. Tel: 01206 242524. The Museum is a registered charity.
The Museum has a wide collection of locomotives and rolling stock,
some of which are fully restored and others are undergoing repair
and restoration.Visitors are welcome to look around the shed

St Botolph's Priory. Nr
Colchester Town station. Tel: 01206 282931. The 12th-century
nave of the first Augustinian priory church in England, with
an impressive west front. The remains of St Botolph's Priory
are almost hidden among the town's sprawling growth over recent
centuries, but worth searching out if visiting Colchester. English
Heritage. Location: In the centre of Colchester.
Colchester Castle and Museum is situated in Castle Park at the
eastern end of the High Street. Tel: 01206 282939. After the
Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror ordered castles
to be built throughout England. Colchester was one of the sites
chosen and work began in 1076. Displays 2000 years of some of
the most important events in British history. Location: In the
centre of Colchester.
Dedham Vale and Flatford
- Constable Country. Flatford Mill is on the River Stour close
to the Suffolk-Essex border. There is a tiny 16th century thatched
cottage (Bridge Cottage) beside the river, now owned by the National
Trust. Famous location for John Constable's idyllic pastoral
paintings. About 4 miles north of Colchester.
