The Old Man of Coniston is one of the Cumbrian classics at 2628ft,
its craggy bulk rising behind the village of Coniston. The views
from the summit are worth the 2-hour hike, to the Cumbrian coast
and across to Langdale, Windermere and Coniston itself.
It was on Coniston Water
that Donald Campbell took his "Bluebird" in 1967, to
better his own speed record. The jet-powered craft hit an estimated
320 mph before it hit a patch of turbulence. The Ruskin Museum
at Coniston has a gallery of memorabilia and photographs in tribute
to him.
