Devon has a wealth of tourist
attractions and a tradition
of family seaside
holiday resorts, with beaches to the north and
south. The county's history is bound up with the sea - from
Plymouth, Drake set out to fight the Spanish Armada and
the Pilgrim Fathers sailed to America.
-
- Exeter is the
West Country's largest city; it has one of the finest medieval
cathedrals in the region, with the longest stretch of Gothic
vaulting in the world.
- The rocky northern
coast shelters the lovely towns of
Lynton, Lynmouth
and Ilfracombe.
- Somerset is
an agricultural county, known for its cider-making and Cheddar
cheese. It offers good walking country - the
Mendip Hills are cut by gorges where caves were inhabited from
prehistoric times,
the Quantocks to the west are less cultivated, while
to the far west of the county, the wilder
Exmoor National
Park spans the border with Devon.
