The Docklands are about
6 miles from Charing Cross, Westminster, generally accepted as
the place for measuring the distance to and from London. It is
an area comprising parts Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Globe Town,
Newham and Greenwich. It lies on the north bank of the Thames,
comprising mainly of former properties of the Port of London
including the East and West India Docks and Royal Docks. The
