Lincluden Collegiate Church situated on the banks of the beautiful
River Nith is one of the finest examples of medieval architecture
in Scotland. Here are the remains of a collegiate church and
the accommodation for its canons founded in 1389 by Archibald
the Grim, 3rd Earl of Douglas, on the site of an earlier nunnery.
Location: On the outskirts of Dumfries.
Twelve Apostles Stone
Circle, near Nithsdale, Dumfries. Twelve Apostles is the largest
stone circle in mainland Scotland and one of the largest in Great
Britain, with its maximum diameter of 88m. The site is split
by a hedge and contains eleven stones. About 3 miles northwest
of Dumfries.
The Ruthwell Cross, Ruthwell, Annan. The cross is located inside
the church in Ruthwell. The Cross was carved by skilled Northumbrian
sculptors in the early 8th century. It is the most important
Anglo-Saxon cross in Scotland and a monument of international
importance. The cross originally stood near the present church.
In 1664 it was pulled down and smashed on the instructions of
the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. In 1802 it was
re-erected in the manse garden and in 1887 was moved to a specially
built apse in the church. About 9 miles east of Dumfries.
Caerlaverock Castle, Caerlaverock,
Dumfries DG1 4RU Tel: 01387 770 244. Caerlaverock Castle is an
impressive landmark in the Nithsdale countryside, standing guard
over the Solway Firth. It is a unique late 13th century stone
enclosure fortress, surrounded by double ditches. The castle
is shaped like a triangular shield, with a strong double tower
at one corner where the drawbridge was located. The castle is
under the care of Historic Scotland and is open to the public.
About 9 miles southeast of Dumfries.

opportunity to get close to some of Caerlaverock's most spectacular
wildlife. Throughout autumn, winter and spring, thousands of
wild geese and other birds can be seen from hides and observation
towers. In summer, nature trails meander through flower-rich
meadows alive with wildlife. About 9 miles southeast of Dumfries.
