Preston Mill & Phantassie Doocot, East Linton, East Lothian,
EH40 3DS. Tel (01620) 860426. Preston Mill is one of the oldest
mechanically working meal mills in Scotland. The present stone
buildings date from the 18th century, with the conical roofed
kiln and attractive red pantiled buildings. The water-wheel and
the grain milling machinery it powers are relatively modern and
the mill was still used commercially until 1959. Visitors can
see and hear the mechanisms in action and find out about the
working life of a miller. About 6 miles west of Dunbar.
Doonhill Homestead is
the site, marked out in the grass, of a wooden hall of a 6th-century
British chief, and of an Anglian chiefs hall, which superseded
it in the 7th century, revealed by aerial photography followed
by excavation in the 1960's. It is a rare record of the Anglian
occupation of southeast Scotland. About 2 miles south of Dunbar.
