West Mersea. West Mersea is a town on a small island known as Mersea, just off the east coast of Essex. Mersea Island is approximately 5 miles long, 2 miles wide and rising only about 70 feet above sea level. It can be reached by the Strood, the island's only link to the mainland. West Mersea is 7 miles south of Colchester, 18 miles west of Clacton and 18 miles east of Braintree.
