Fort William attractions The Neptune's Staircase, Fort William. Neptune's Staircase is an extensive flight of nine locks in the Caledonian Canal. The canal, one of Thomas Telford's masterpieces opened in 1847, connects Loch Ness to Loch Linnhe and provides a safer inland route through Scotland from Moray Firth to the Firth of Lorne.
