Falkland was built by James IV and James V between 1450 and 1541
as their country residence. The accommodation on view is some
of the most impressive and atmospheric you will find anywhere.
This includes the beautifully panelled keeper's quarters, the
Old Library, the recreated King's and Queen's Rooms in the restored
Cross House, the Bakehouse, the breathtaking Chapel Royal and
the remarkable Tapestry Corridor. About 5 miles north of Glenrothes.
Balvaird Castle, near
Glenfarg. (Limited opening, confirm by telephone on 01786 431324).
A late 15th-century tower on an L plan, extended in 1581 by the
addition of a walled courtyard and gatehouse. Balvaird Castle
was built in 1500 by Sir Andrew Murray, a member of the Murray
family of Tullibardine. From its elevated position, it commands
an excellent view overlooking Glen Farg, the Eden valley and
the Lomonds. Balvaird is notable among Scottish castles of its
date for its refined architectural detail. It is now managed
by Historic Scotland. About 10 miles northwest of Glenrothes.
Scottish Deer Centre, Bow of Fife, By Cupar. Tel. 01337-810391.
The Scottish Deer Centre is both enjoyable and educational. Here
you can see many species of deer at close hand, and even feed,
stroke or photograph them during a ranger-led tour. There are
indoor and outdoor adventure parks for the kids as well as a
restaurant and winery. www.tsdc.co.uk. About 8 miles north of
Glenrothes.
Fife Animal Park, Collessie,
Fife. Tel: 01337 831 830. At Fife Animal Park at Collesie you
can see ostriches, wallabies, emus, bison and llamas as well
as more familiar breeds. About 9 miles north of Glenrothes.
