- Glossop is one of the
traditional " gateways " to the Peak District. Originally
a cotton town it stands in the north - east corner of Derbyshire
and on the west side of the Snake Pass.
- Glossop is in two parts, Old
Glossop and Howardstown, built by the Duke of Norfolk
around Norfolk Square as an industrial
enclave for the Lancastrian textile industry.
- The Victorian affluence is
easily recognised here,
with the granite - built market arcade fronting the market hall,
and well laid out dignified
squares.
- The old town, Old Glossop,
became a backwater of old
and interesting buildings that
commercialism left untouched, with a network of small narrow streets, closely knit cottages
and an old cross where fairs were
- held. To the west of Glossop
is Dinting Railway Centre
and nearby, the splendid Dinting Viaduct.
