620638/620642. Large range of natural water-worn caverns featuring
stalactites, stalagmites and Blue John Stone. Eight of the fourteen
known veins are found here. Castleton is the only known place
where Britain's rarest mineral occurs. Blue John Craft Shop in

Grave, in village which also has connection with Charlotte Bronte,
who wrote "Jane Eyre" while staying here. Brass rubbings
may be done of the Eyre family brasses. Open in daylight hours.

CASTLETON VILLAGE MUSEUM, Castleton Visitor Centre, Buxton Road,
Castleton, Hope Valley. Tel. 01433 620679. Village history displays
including Blue John, lead mining, Smithy, Joiner's shop, rope
making, Garland Ceremony etc. On the 2nd April 2004, Castleton's
new state-of-the-art information centre was opened to the public.

TREAK CLIFF CAVERN, Castleton,
Hope Valley, S33 8WP. Tel: 01433 620571. Underground wonderland
of stalactites and stalagmites. World's richest deposits of Blue
John stone easily visible on guided tours of the caverns. Fossils
and other mineral and rock formations. Suitable for people of

SPEEDWELL CAVERN, Winnat's Pass, Castleton, Hope Valley, S33
8WA. Tel: 01433 620512. This unique cavern is an old lead mine
worked in the early part of the 18th Century. It is visited by
boat in complete comfort and safety by travelling along a subterranean

PEVERIL CASTLE, Castleton,
Hope Valley, S33 8WQ. (English Heritage).Tel: 01433 620613. Norman
Motte and Bailey Castle in ruins. Built by William the Conqueror
for his illegitimate son William Peveril, to oversee the lead
mines and Forest of the Peak. Looked after by English Heritage.
About 5 mile west of Hathersage.
HATHERSAGE OPEN AIR HEATED SWIMMING POOL, Oddfellows Road, Hathersage,
Hope Valley. Tel: 01433 650843. The pool surround has changed
little since being built in 1936 and still has the original veranda
and bandstand with a beautiful grass lawn to sunbathe on. Location:

1935 saw the construction
of Ladybower Dam. This project received objections both locally
and nationaly because it involved the flooding of two villages;
Ashopton and Derwent. Derwent village can still be seen in very
dry summers. Ladybower is now a major tourist attraction. More.
