- The gritstone
built town of Hathersage sits in a sheltered valley, beneath
the panoramic view known as " surprise view " - embracing
the Derwent, Mam Tor, Kinder Scout and the Hope Valley. Here
at Millstone Edge, the discarded millstones litter the landscape,
the surplus of a long - gone industry. The town itself began manufacturing
knitting needles in the 16C and also produced umbrella frames.
- Today it is
better known for its literary connections with Charlotte Bronte,
and with Robin Hood's companion, Little John. The latter is said
to have been born in Hathersage, working as a nail - maker before
becoming an outlaw in Sherwood Forest. A grave about 11' long
in the parish churchyard is reputed to be his, and can be found
on the southern boundary of the churchyard.
