John O'Groats attractions Thurso Castle, Thurso KW14. Thurso Castle was originally a 12th century earthwork fortress, founded by the Norse Earls. In the 17th century, it was replaced by a stone tower house. The roofless but impressive remains are visible across the rivermouth from the old town of Thurso. About 14 miles east of John O' Groats.
