  Once home to the Prince Bishops who ruled the North like kings, Durham Castle was founded in 1072 and has a Norman chapel dating from 1080. A fine example of motte and bailey castle.

 

  Home of the Percy's, dukes of Northumberland since 1309, Alnwick Castle was described by the Victorians as the 'Windsor of the North'. It provides a palatial exquisite setting for its collection of art treasures.

 Perched on top of a rocky crag and accessible over a causeway at low tide only, the castle presents an exciting and alluring aspect. Originally a Tudor fort, it was converted into a private house in 1903 by the young Edward Lutyens. The small rooms are full of intimate decoration and design, the windows looking down upon the charming walled garden, planned by Gertrude Jekyll.
 

 

 A Medieval family fortress with Tudor additions, complete with jousting course , torture chamber and dungeons. Garden and landscaped avenues were created by Sir Jeffrey de Wyatville.
