Formerly the home of the Boyd family, Earl of Kilmarnock, Dean Castle houses a wonderful collection of arms, armour, tapestries and musical instruments. The earliest part of the fortress is the square Keep, built around 1350 by the Boyd family. www.deancastle.com. Location: On the outskirts of Kilmarnock.

The Museum's Boatshop on Irvine's harbourside has exhibitions, ship models and a children's activity area. The guided tours start here throughout the day.
