Macclesfield Cheshire

Situated on the lower, western slopes of the Pennines, Macclesfield was first known for buttons, then later as a silk town. Silk mills, chapels and banks, all solid square buildings of blackened stone, are scattered throughout the town.

The Heritage Centre was once a huge Sunday school and now houses the splendid silk museum and shop. Nearby Paradise Mill is a working museum of the town's former silk industry. Twenty six hand - powered Jacquard looms survive and are used to demonstrate the skills of a dying craft.
