Tantallon Castle, North

Castle stands on a rocky headland surrounded by cliffs overlooking
Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth. It was the seat of the Douglas
Earls of Angus, one of the most powerful baronial families in
Scotland. In the late 14th century, they built a great stone
curtain across a rocky promontory, with lofty towers and halls.
Tantallon served as a noble fortification for more than 3 centuries
and endured frequent sieges. During Cromwell's invasion in 1651
it suffered heavy damage. It passed into the care of the State
in 1924, and is now looked after by Historic Scotland. About
2 miles east of North Berwick.
Preston Mill & Phantassie Doocot, East Linton, East Lothian,
EH40 3DS. Tel (01620) 860426. Preston Mill is one of the oldest
mechanically working meal mills in Scotland. The present stone
buildings date from the 18th century, with the conical roofed
kiln and attractive red pantiled buildings. The water-wheel and
the grain milling machinery it powers are relatively modern and
the mill was still used commercially until 1959. Visitors can
see and hear the mechanisms in action and find out about the
working life of a miller. About 5 miles south of North Berwick.
