The Sandbach Crosses are two heavily carved Saxon stone crosses
located in the town of Sandbach. They are believed to date from
the 9th century, to commemorate the advent of Christianity in
the Kingdom of Mercia about 653 A.D. during the reign of the
Saxon King Penda. They are decorated on all faces with carved
figures, animals and vine scrolls. The taller cross shows biblical
scenes and has a mutiliated head. The shorter cross has a truncated
shaft with the mutilated head of another cross. Location: In
the centre of Sandbach in the market place.
