Shetland. Shetland is a group of islands between the Orkney Islands and the Faroe Islands, north of mainland Scotland. The administrative centre is Lerwick. Shetland offers an abundance of wildlife, otters and seals, wild birds in huge colonies. Shetland has its own unique culture, dialect and heritage. It is the perfect place to visit for for a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including walking, cycling, fishing, golf. There is a network of well-maintained roads to explore the islands. Daily flights are available from the UK mainland, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. You can also fly direct to Shetland from London Stansted. Sumburgh Airport lies to the south of Lerwick. Hire cars, buses and taxis are available at the airport. Overnight car ferries sail from Aberdeen to Lerwick.

Shetland attractions Shetland Museum, Lower Hillhead, Lerwick, Shetland ZE1 0EL. Tel: 01595 695057. Shetland's main museum, covering all aspects of over 5,000 years of island life. Main display themes are archaeology, social history, agriculture, maritime, textiles and plus temporary exhibitions of local contemporary art. A vast archive also offers a possibility to look at old photographs. www.shetland-museum.org.uk. Lerwick is the main town and on the east coast of the Shetland Islands Mainland.

Shetland attractions CROFTHOUSE MUSEUM, Boddam. The house is a typical thatched crofthouse of the 19th century restored with traditional materials. A warm peat fire and a welcoming custodian ensures you will feel like at home. South of Boddam, May-Sept, daily, 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm. Admission free but donations welcome. Boddam is located in the southernmost tip of the Shetland Islands Mainland.

Shetland attractions JARLSHOF - Prehistoric and Norse Settlement, Sumburgh Head. Tel. 01950 460112 for opening times. This site of great historical importance consists of a number of ancient settlements dating back to Bronze Age. Also of significance are the remains of an entire Viking settlement and late 16th century mansion house. Sumburgh is the southernmost town on the Shetland Islands Mainland.
