is home to George Stephenson's 'Billy', a forerunner of the world-famous

Souter Lighthouse, Coast Road, Whitburn, Sunderland Tel: 01915
293161 - Souter Lighthouse overlooks the cliffs of Marsden Bay,
high above the rocks and notorious currents of the 'Whitburn
Steel'. It started operating in 1871 and at the time, was the
most advanced in the world. Visitors can climb the 76 steps to
the top of the tower to enjoy wide views of the coastline, from
the mouth of the Tyne to the Tees. Tea-room with indoor &
outdoor facilities and National Trust shop. About 2 miles south
of South Shields.
