It has a magnificent marble and limestone chapel, reputed to be the largest private chapel in Europe, and is located on a promontory overlooking the Rivers Wear and Gaunless. Binchester was the largest Roman fort in County Durham. A small part has been excavated and is open to view. Most of the fort and the remains of the nearby civilian settlement still lie buried in the surrounding fields. Car parking is available on site or the fort is a 20-minute walk along the banks of the River Wear from Bishop Auckland Market Place. About 3 miles southwest of Spennymoor.

It opened in Shildon in September 2004 and links with the existing Timothy Hackworth Museum. The new Museum houses in excess of 60 exhibits and provides an opportunity to view the history of the railways. About 5 miles south of Spennymoor.
