displays tell the story of Sunderland from its prehistoric past
through to the present day. The Museum contains a large collection
of the locally made Sunderland Lustreware pottery. The Art Gallery
features paintings by L S Lowry who made Sunderland his second
home. The stunning Winter Gardens has over 1,500 flowers and
plants. In the centre of Sunderland.
Washington Wetland Centre
is set in 100 acres of stunning wetland and woodland on the River
Wear and is one of the North East's biggest conservation success
stories. Its wild reserve is home to a nesting colony of nearly
50 Grey Herons, while Hawthorn Wood Hide offers spectacular views
of woodland birds including Great-Spotted Woodpecker and Bullfinch.
See hundreds of rare and endangered ducks, geese and swans, plus

Hylton Castle, Sunderland Hylton Castle is an 11th century fortified
medieval gatehouse/tower. The keep, four main walls and part
of the chapel are all still standing. It stands in Hylton Dene,
Sunderland. The site is owned by English Heritage and is freely

Souter Lighthouse, Coast
Road, Whitburn, Sunderland Tel: 01915 293161 - Souter Lighthouse
overlooks the cliffs of Marsden Bay, high above the rocks and
notorious currents of the 'Whitburn Steel'. It started operating
in 1871 and at the time, was the most advanced in the world.
Visitors can climb the 76 steps to the top of the tower to enjoy
wide views of the coastline, from the mouth of the Tyne to the
Tees. Tea-room with indoor & outdoor facilities and National
Trust shop. About 4 miles north of Sunderland.
