561600. The county's greatest attraction has 3 great towers that
dominate the city and can be seen from miles around. The central
tower stands 271 ft high, the second highest in the country after
Salisbury Cathedral. Built on the orders of William the Conqueror,
construction began in 1072. The entrance is below the famous

Lincoln Castle is an impressive
11th century stone motte and bailey fortress, built on the site
of the original Roman Fort of Lindum. The immense 12th century
curtain wall is flanked by two mottes, two gates, and a large
round tower "Cobb Hall". The Magna Carta, one of only
four surviving originals sealed by King John after his meeting
with the Barons at Runnymede in 1215, is now housed within Lincoln
