Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland Tel: 01388 601627 Historically
the principal country residence of the Prince Bishops and now
the official home of the Bishop of Durham. It has a magnificent
marble and limestone chapel, reputed to be the largest private
chapel in Europe, and is located on a promontory overlooking
the Rivers Wear and Gaunless. About 5 miles north of Willington.
Binchester Roman Fort,

Binchester was the largest Roman fort in County Durham. A small
part has been excavated and is open to view. Most of the fort
and the remains of the nearby civilian settlement still lie buried
in the surrounding fields. Car parking is available on site or
the fort is a 20-minute walk along the banks of the River Wear
from Bishop Auckland Market Place. About 3 miles south of Willington.

Sedgefield Racecourse is one of Britains most popular racecourses.

Locomotion: the National
Railway Museum at Shildon, Shildon Tel: 01388 777999 Locomotion
is an £11 million project, a joint venture between Sedgefield
Borough Council and the National Railway Museum at York. It opened
in Shildon in September 2004 and links with the existing Timothy
Hackworth Museum. The new Museum houses in excess of 60 exhibits
and provides an opportunity to view the history of the railways.

Durham Cathedral and Castle - Here you can visit the Tomb of
St. Cuthbert and The Venerable Bede. The Castle is now part of
the University College but tours take place throughout the day.
With the Cathedral, it is still very much an icon of the City
